Online Blackjack Advantage: No Waiting

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

A lot of people prefer to do their gambling at a brick and mortar casino, where you have all of the sights and sounds, performances, cocktail waitresses, glamour and style. However, there are a lot of advantages to playing at an online casino instead.

If you play online blackjack, you don’t have to worry about feeling intimidated or rushed by the dealer or other players. You also don’t have to worry about tipping the dealer. Since you’re home, you can be as comfortable as you want, including lying in bed in your underwear while playing online blackjack on your laptop computer. There are also fewer distractions, or at least you can better control any distractions.

There is another advantage, though, that is not often discussed. When you play online blackjack, there is no waiting. If you walk into a busy brick and mortar casino and want to play blackjack, you may have to wait your turn. Blackjack is the most popular table game in casinos, so there is never a shortage of people playing.

Different blackjack tables offer different rules and odds, so once you find the one at which you want to play, that table might be full. If it is, you have to wait until someone is done playing and gets up from their seat. Sometimes this happens within a few minutes and it’s no big deal, but other times that blackjack table will be full for some time. So what do you do then?

If you’ve been waiting for a while and a seat hasn’t opened up at your preferred blackjack table, you then have to either keep waiting or go find a different table. Maybe there’s another table that has the rules you want or maybe there is not. You might have to compromise and take a table with less favorable rules just in order to play right away. Or maybe you should go play a different game and then come back to blackjack.

When you play at an online casino, you don’t have that problem. Online blackjack tables are virtual tables that really don’t have anyone playing there. Because of the online setting, the internet casinos have the effect of having an unlimited number of blackjack tables with an unlimited number of seats. That is because you are simply playing against the computer and no real table is necessary. Likewise, there is no limit of how many dealers the casino employs (since there is no dealer) and there are no other players at the table. Instead, it is simply you and the dealer, or more accurately, you and the random number generator.

For that reason, you can visit the online casino at any time, whether it’s peak hours or a slow time, and have no problem playing right away. You can join an online blackjack table instantly and have no wait. That’s one of the reasons I prefer to play online blackjack. There is no wait and no annoying guy next to you telling you his life story and about that time that he almost broke the casino.

To take advantage of being able to play instantly, find a good online casino and play today.

Online Blackjack Advantage: No Tipping

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

As I have said before, there are many advantages to playing online blackjack rather than playing at a brick and mortar casino. For one thing, you don’t need to travel to an online casino, pay for lodging or food. There are no hookers or drug dealers trying to talk you out of your money (well, probably not, depending on where you live).

Another advantage of playing online blackjack is that at an online casino, there is no dealer. Why is that an advantage? It is for a few reasons. First of all, even though it’s irrational, new blackjack players are often intimidated by a dealer, especially when it seems that they’re trying to speed up the game. They feel rushed and pressured into making a quick decision, which can lead to mistakes. When playing at an online casino, you can take as much time as you want, pull out your blackjack card, study it, call a friend to ask for advice, take a nap, and then decide to take a hit. It doesn’t matter because there is no dealer waiting for you, nor are there other players at the table.

Another reason that playing online blackjack is better is because no dealer means that you don’t have to tip. You may not know this, but you are expected to tip at a blackjack table at a brick and mortar casino, especially if you’re having a hot streak. If you didn’t know this, then you were probably right when you thought the dealer was unhappy with you. How much you should tip depends on who you ask – mostly it’s personal preference – but you tip more if you’re betting more and in the end, tipping can increase the house edge.

With online blackjack, however, there is no dealer, so even if you wanted to tip, there’s no one to give it to. I’m sure if you contacted customer service and told them that since you made a lot of money you want to give some to the casino, they would probably laugh and assume it was a prank. When you play at an online casino, there is no tipping, which means you hold on to more of your winnings. In a land-based casino, even if you only tip in one out of every 100 hands, that adds 1% to the house edge. By playing online blackjack, you get to keep that 1% (or more).

Therefore, if you are new to the blackjack game, don’t have a whole lot of disposable income, or simply don’t like tipping, playing online is the better way to go. Online blackjack is easier, less stressful and it saves you money.

Casino Robbed in Switzerland

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

So you’re at the blackjack table making some money, having a good time. You’re not bothering anybody and nobody’s bothering you. The whole table is enjoying themselves when all of the sudden your blackjack game is interrupted by 10 men armed with machine guns.

It can happen. It did happen this week at a casino in Switzerland. Early Sunday morning then men arrived dressed in black clothes and ski masks, split into groups and raided the Grand Casino Basel. They were unable to break into the vault, but one group did rob the cashiers of unsecured money. Meanwhile, another group raided the blackjack and roulette tables, taking money from the dealers and players.

As the thieves were leaving the casino, a woman unknowingly parked in front of the getaway car. The robbers then shot into her car, dragged her out and beat her. The thieves then are believed to have escaped into bordering France. Aside from the woman pulled from the car, there were no serious injuries reported, though several casino patrons were reportedly hit or kicked during the robbery.

It was a horrific experience for those involved and the type everyone would like to avoid. That is why I have pointed out before that safety is another benefit of playing online blackjack rather than visiting a brick and mortar casino. Though casinos are generally considered safe, incidents like this have been known to happen. Though they may not get robbed as often as a gas station or a jewelry store, casinos are obvious targets for crimes like these because of the large amount of money involved.

I would never say that it’s unsafe to visit a brick and mortar casino, but I do think if you’re worried about such a thing, you may be better off playing at home. Sure, home invasions happen as well, but if it happens it won’t be a result of playing blackjack. Therefore, playing blackjack is safer online.

Blackjack Pool Party at Caesar’s Palace

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

There are many ways in which playing online blackjack can be better than playing it at a brick and mortar casino, but there really is no way to replicate the atmosphere of a good casino on the Vegas Strip. One of the most famous casinos on the Strip is Caesar’s Palace and right now they have a cool new way to play blackjack.

For those of you who are unaware, Las Vegas is pretty warm for large parts of the year. Now that they’re into Spring, things have started to heat up in the desert. When it’s getting hot out, there’s no better way to cool off and relax than a dip in a pool and Caesar’s Palace has one of the best pools in the country. The pool experience is called Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis and its mammoth pools are surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, architecture and other fancy frills that you would associate with a high-class casino.

Oh, and there’s something else unique and enjoyable about the pools here: They offer blackjack. Caesar’s Palace now offers swim-up blackjack tables at their resort and they are already an instant hit. If you’re in the mood for a more casual blackjack experience, there is no better way than relaxing in the pool at a 5-star resort. Oh, and some people may be interested to know that when it comes to the women’s swimwear, tops are optional at Caesar’s pools. Again, not something you can replicate with online blackjack, though I should point out that whenever you play blackjack you should keep your mind focused on the game. Playing blackjack in a pool setting may make you lose your concentration, but for some the distraction is a trade-off for the fun they’re having.

I have not yet been to Casar’s Palace’s Garden of the Gods, but next time I go to Las Vegas I will definitely check out their swim-up blackjack tables. And before you ask, no, I will not post a video blog that day.

Safety: Another Advantage of Playing Online

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

In the past, I have discussed some of the advantages of gambling online rather than in a brick and mortar casino. However, there is one benefit that had never occurred to me until now. You don’t have to worry about being robbed.

Online casinos, of course, have the risk of someone hacking into your account and stealing from you that way, but that’s not what I mean. Besides, reputable online casinos have safety measures in place to prevent that kind of thing. What I mean is some guy sticking a gun in your face and demanding you hand over your money.

That exact situation occurred in a south Florida casino last month. On January 29, 2010, a man identified as Dominic Zibuda walked into a Seminole casino, brandished a gun, and took money from a casino employee. He then fled with the thousands of dollars. Though no one was hurt and no casino customers were robbed, the event has certainly made an impact. Since that date, that casino and others in the area have reported a sharp decline in attendance and revenue. Many insiders believe that there is a direct relation between that two: that people are worried about their safety in the casino and have decided instead to stay home.

The south Florida casino robbery did not have a happy ending. After the authorities were tipped off to the robber’s identity, a SWAT operation at Zibuda’s house ended with the suspect turning his gun on himself and committing suicide.

It’s a sad ending to the story, but it brings up a question. Where do you feel safer, in your own home or in a casino with millions of dollars sitting around? Now, I don’t believe that the casinos are unsafe. I think you’re just as safe, if not more so, in a casino as in a bank or convenience store and people keep going to those. However, if you do your gambling online you can stay in a locked home and keep a loaded gun handy, just in case someone should decide to break in. You don’t have that option at a brick and mortar casino.

Online Blackjack vs. Casino Blackjack

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Blackjack fans didn’t use to have a lot of choices. If you didn’t live close to a casino and didn’t have the means to travel to a casino often, then most of the time you played blackjack with your friends at home, with one of you serving as the dealer. The problem is, friendly games of blackjack has never been as fun as poker. Add to that the complications of wagering (wouldn’t everyone want to be the dealer?) and it is just too problematic. Luckily, these days we have online blackjack. To people new to online gambling, though, they may not know how the online version of the game differs from playing it in a casino.

The main difference comes from the fact that you’re playing against a computer instead of a croupier. This means several things. First of all, it means you can take your time. Though I’ve never witnessed a dealer being rude in any way, some people feel rushed when the dealer turns to them and asks them to make a decision. It can be stressful for some. Should I hit or stand? Stop rushing me! Let me think! When playing online, there is no croupier and there is no one else standing at the table next to you, so you can take all the time in the world to make a decision and no one will care. If you want to, you can even look at a basic strategy chart while you play and consult it before every decision. Since there’s no time limit and no one will look at you funny for needing a chart, there’s nothing to stop you.

The other major difference is how the cards are dealt. In a casino, the croupier shuffles the decks and gives out the cards to each person. A card counter can gain an advantage by counting the number of high and low cards. This is more difficult the more decks there are in play, which the player can determine by looking at the shoe, asking the dealer or by looking on the table. However, though card counting with multiple decks in a casino may be difficult, it is impossible online.

Let me say it again so I’m clear: Card counting online does not work. That is because online, the cards you’re dealt aren’t confided to a certain number of decks. The decks don’t really exist, but if they did, they would be unlimited. You see, with online blackjack, the cards that you are dealt are determined by a computer program called a random number generator.

The random number generator uses a complex algorithm to select a series of numbers hundreds of times every second. Each set of numbers corresponds to a certain outcome, such as which card your are dealt. Because a new sequence of numbers is chosen hundreds of times per second, what card you receive is determined by when you lick the “hit” button. Clicking a microsecond earlier or later changes what card you receive. With casino play, the next card is the next card; it is sitting there in the shoe waiting to be dealt. Because card counting doesn’t work with online blackjack, basic strategy is the best you can do. For that reason, the odds are a little worse online, at least for those people who count cards.

Aside from that, the game is basically the same online. That atmosphere is different than actually being on a casino floor and the graphics may be different, but the gameplay is still the same. So if you don’t live near a casino and still want to play blackjack, visit an online casino. Just don’t try counting cards.
